Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 29, 2026
The Well is operated by Look Up The Stars Astrology Services Inc. ("The Well," "we," or "us"). This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the rights you have. It covers both our website and the mobile app. By using The Well you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
-
Account info: email address and display name.
-
Birth-chart info: birth date, time (or "unknown"), city, country, coordinates, and timezone, for you and anyone you add to "We". When you add a person yourself, you confirm you may use their details for this purpose.
-
Username and connections: the username you choose, the friend requests you send and receive, the people you block, the relationship type and the name you give each connection, whether your profile can be found by username, and your sharing choices (see Section 3).
-
Profile context you provide during onboarding: your pronouns. You may skip this.
-
Activity in the app: likes, reflections, saved notes, completed integrations, notification preferences, and an internal event log of which screens you opened and which cards you interacted with, including noting when a screenshot is taken in the app (we record the event, never the image). We may also record how a session moves through the app's screens (taps, scrolls and what was on screen) so we can see where the app is confusing or broken. Anything you type is hidden in these recordings, and they are kept for up to 30 days. We use this to improve the product and debug issues.
-
Push notification token: if you enable notifications, your device's push token so we can deliver them.
-
Purchase records: if you buy a subscription or a one-time question unlock, we store what you bought, when, and the platform transaction identifier. Payment card details are handled by Apple; we never see them.
-
Founding-member purchases (now closed): if you bought a founding-member subscription on our website during the pre-launch period, our payment processor collected the card and billing details needed to process it. We hold a confirmation, your email, the plan you chose, and limited card metadata (such as the card brand and last four digits), never your full card number.
-
Referral data: your invite code and, when someone joins through your link, a record linking the two accounts so the reward can be applied.
-
Technical info: device platform, operating-system version, app version, your current device timezone (so notifications arrive at the right local time), and crash logs (no personal content).
We do not collect your real-time location, contacts, photos, microphone, camera, browsing history, or advertising identifiers. Aside from the cookies our payment processor needs to complete your purchase and prevent fraud, we do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.
2. How we use your information
-
To compute and display your natal chart and the natal charts of people you add.
-
To show daily and long-term transits relevant to your chart.
-
To generate the personalized readings, summaries, and snapshots you see in the app.
-
To send the optional notification reminders you turn on, and to email you about your purchase and account.
-
To detect and prevent abuse, debug crashes, and keep the app working.
-
To honor founding-member purchases made during our pre-launch period and provide the access they include.
-
To produce anonymized, group-level statistics about how the app is used, which we may publish. These never identify you.
We do not sell your personal data, run advertising, build advertising profiles, or use your data to train any AI model.
3. Connections and what other people can see
There are two kinds of people in your "We" tab. A custom profile is someone whose birth details you typed in yourself. Nothing about a custom profile leaves your account, and that person is not told they were added.
A friend on The Well is another account that you and they both agreed to connect, by username. Connecting is mutual: either side can end it at any time from the three-dot menu, and you can block an account so it cannot request you again.
When two accounts connect, each account receives a copy of the other's birth details and natal chart, because the compatibility reading ("Bonds") is computed from both charts. That copy is removed when either of you ends the connection or deletes their account.
A friend can always see your natal chart and your current cycles. Everything else is your choice, in Settings → Sharing: your archetypes, your trait map, your hidden traits, and your hidden trends each have a switch, and you can also set a different choice for one specific person. Changing a switch takes effect immediately.
Your username can be found by anyone who types it exactly, unless you turn off "discoverable" in Settings → Sharing. Usernames that contain offensive words are refused.
The Relationship Patterns analysis looks across the people you have added to find recurring themes. It runs inside your account only and is never shown to your connections.
4. AI-generated content
The Well combines astrology content written by hand with personalisation and additional layers generated by AI.
Written by hand: the base interpretations you read, authored by a human astrologer. This includes all of the birth-chart text inside the placement cards (Sun, Moon, the other planets, houses, and aspects across the six dimensions), the transit and deeper-cycle text, the daily energy text, the lunar-cycle and eclipse base text, the In the Sky articles, the truths to sit with, all of the strengths and vulnerabilities inside the archetype profiles, and the titles in the Year Planner. These are written by a person, not generated by AI.
Generated by AI: the personalisation layers that adapt the hand-written content to you specifically. This includes the "For You" premium readings inside the cycles, the "in a nutshell" per-dimension summaries, the "Personalised for you" reveal on lunations and eclipses, the hidden-trait readings (including their names) that surface as you engage, the practice exercises generated from your chart and what has resonated, the Year Planner question answers and their timing summaries, the personalised reveal inside In the Sky articles, the monthly what-this-month-favors lists, the Stereotypes and Hidden Trends readings, the past-cycle reflection statements, and reflection summaries. For friends on The Well, AI also writes the "In a nutshell" summary of a shared archetype snapshot (from the picked statements only, written the first time you or a connection opens it), and the Bond timeline notes that describe what each person's slow cycles were doing at the dates you enter.
When AI is used, we send only the relevant astrological details, any text you have marked as resonant, and, for the Bond features, the first name and pronouns you gave the other person so the text can refer to them. We do not send your email or account ID. Our AI provider processes this data under their commercial terms and does not use it to train models. They may retain inputs and outputs for up to 30 days for trust-and-safety review unless a Zero Data Retention agreement is in place.
A note on timing. The timing features (the Year Planner questions and the windows they show) are not decided by AI. They are computed by a proprietary, deterministic method designed entirely by our founder, which matches her hand-authored astrological rules against the year's transits to your chart. AI is only used afterward to phrase the description of each window.
5. Who else processes your data
To run the app, we share specific data with the third-party services we rely on. Each one only sees what it needs for its purpose:
-
Authentication provider: sign-in and account management. You sign in with your Apple or Google account; the provider receives your email and manages your sign-in credentials. We never see any password.
-
Database and backend provider: stores your account, profile, birth data, activity, and notification preferences.
-
Chart computation server: receives birth date, time, latitude, longitude, and timezone to compute your natal chart and transit positions. No identifying info attached.
-
AI provider: generates the AI content described in Section 4.
-
Mapping service: suggests your birth city as you type it.
-
Push notification routing: delivers the optional notifications you turn on through your device's operating system. Receives your push token and the notification text.
-
Billing: purchases made inside the iOS or Android app are processed by Apple or Google (and our subscription-management provider), which receive the transaction details needed to validate your purchase. Purchases made on our website are processed by our payment provider, which receives your card details, billing address, and email in order to take the payment; we never see your full card number. In both cases we receive confirmation of what you bought, never your card details.
-
Crash and error reporting: receives crash logs and technical error details (such as device model, OS version, and app version) so we can find and fix problems. Active only in released app builds.
-
Product analytics: receives in-app activity such as which screens you open and which features you use, and the session recordings described above, so we can understand how the app is used and improve it. This is first-party product analytics, not advertising. It is never used to build advertising profiles and is never sold.
-
Developer and analysis tooling: the engineering tools we use to build and maintain The Well, including an AI coding assistant, may process account and activity data when we investigate a problem or analyse how the app is being used. This is internal work on our own service. It is never advertising and the data is never sold.
We do not use Google Analytics, Meta / Facebook SDKs, or any advertising-technology provider. Each of our processors is contractually required to handle your data only for the purposes we've set. Names of specific providers are available on request.
We may also disclose information in three additional cases: (a) if we are legally required to (subpoena, court order); (b) to protect the rights or safety of users or the public; (c) in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case the receiving party will be bound by this policy.
6. Your rights
You can read and edit most of your data directly in the app: your profile, your birth details, your saved entries, and your connections. From Settings you can reset all your saved slides. From the We tab you can delete a saved person or end a connection with a friend, which removes the copies of each other's details from both accounts. To delete your entire account and all associated data, go to Settings → Delete account. The in-app flow removes your data immediately, including the copies of your details held in your connections' accounts, your friend links, your sharing choices, and any bond reports; backup logs roll off within 90 days. You can also email the address at the bottom of this policy and we'll complete deletion within 30 days of your request.
If you live in British Columbia or elsewhere in Canada: you have the right to access and correct your personal information held by us, to withdraw consent, and to file a complaint with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (or the equivalent authority in your province). We comply with the BC Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and PIPEDA as applicable.
If you live in California: you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to correct it, to delete it, to limit our use of sensitive personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
If you live in the EU, UK, or another GDPR jurisdiction: you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port, and object to processing of your data, and to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. The legal basis for our processing is your consent (which you may withdraw at any time) and our legitimate interest in providing the service you signed up for.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below. We may need to verify your identity before responding.
7. International users
The Well is operated from Canada and our processors operate in the United States, the European Union, and other regions. By using The Well you understand that your data may be transferred to and processed in countries whose privacy laws may differ from your own. Where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.
8. Data retention
While your account is active, we keep your data so the app works. AI-generated readings are cached and regenerate when your underlying chart or selections change. If you delete your account, we delete your data within 30 days; backup logs may persist for up to 90 days before rolling off. We may retain anonymized, aggregated data indefinitely (for example, error counts that no longer identify you).
9. Security
Data in transit is encrypted via HTTPS / TLS, and our providers encrypt data at rest. We don't store passwords ourselves; our authentication provider does. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your data, we will notify you within 72 hours of becoming aware of it, in line with applicable law.
10. Children
The Well is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. Users under 18 should use the app only with the consent of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Third-party links
The app may contain links to third-party websites or services we don't control. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Read their policies before providing data.
12. Disclaimer
The Well is for entertainment and self-reflection purposes only. The readings, summaries, and transit interpretations are based on traditional astrology and are not a substitute for professional advice, whether medical, psychological, legal, financial, or otherwise. Nothing in the app is a prediction, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are facing a serious decision or a health concern, please consult a qualified professional.
13. Changes to this policy
If we make a meaningful change to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and notify you in the app. Your continued use of The Well after a change means you accept the updated policy.
